Former Western Province fullback Nicolaas Burgert “Calla” Scholtz has appeared in court after facing six alleged breaches of a domestic violence protection order.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed that Scholtz made his first court appearance on Tuesday.
However, the court postponed the matter to allow for a formal bail application.
Police arrested the 66-year-old before his appearance in court.
According to the Hermanus Times, Scholtz is expected back in court on Friday, 24 July.
Bail Decision Still Pending
The NPA said the bail application remains part-heard.
As a result, the court will decide whether Scholtz should be released on bail when proceedings resume.
This is not the first time Scholtz has attracted public attention over legal matters.
In 2016, authorities linked him to an illegal abalone seizure at his Greyton property.
However, Scholtz later proved that a tenant occupied the property without his knowledge.
Celebrated Rugby Career
Despite the current case, Scholtz remains a respected figure in South African rugby history.
He starred for Western Province during one of the province’s most successful periods.
The team won five straight Currie Cup titles between 1982 and 1986.
Scholtz also featured on the Springbok internal tour in 1985.
Although he never earned an official Test cap, many regarded him as one of South Africa’s finest uncapped players.
His achievements also earned national recognition.
Scholtz received SA Rugby’s Men’s Player of the Year award in 1988.
