Ex-Warriors Forward Abbas Amidu Arrested With Marijuana Worth US$75,000
Former Zimbabwe Warriors forward Abbas Amidu has been arrested in a major drug bust. The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the footballer was taken into custody alongside another man for allegedly trafficking a large quantity of marijuana.
The arrest occurred on the Kwekwe to Kadoma Highway on 3 October 2025. According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the two men were found with a massive haul of cannabis in their vehicle.
A Significant Haul On The Highway
The police operation led to the discovery of 750kg of dagga, a local term for cannabis. The drugs were found inside a silver Honda Shuttle. The Zimbabwe Republic Police stated the seizure had an estimated street value of US$75,000 (approximately R1.4 million).
In a post on X, the police authority provided specific details of the arrest. They wrote:
“The ZRP confirms the arrest of soccer players, Tumai Matsika, also known as Abas Amidu (29) and Reuben Kudzai Mhlanga (41) for drug trafficking. The two were found in possession of 750kg of dagga valued at USD75 000-00 in a silver Honda Shuttle vehicle, registration number AGP 6776, along Kwekwe – Kadoma Highway on 03/10/25.”
The same police report also mentioned a separate, smaller drug bust that took place at the Trabablas Interchange.
A Football Career With Highs And Lows
Abbas Amidu is a name well-known to Zimbabwean football fans. His career has seen him play for several clubs, both domestically and internationally. He was part of the CAPS United team that won the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League title in 2016.
His performances, particularly in the CAF Champions League, earned him a move abroad. In 2017, he completed a transfer to Saudi Arabian club Al Wehda. This followed reported interest from other Egyptian clubs. However, a previous stint at Egyptian club Entag El-Harby had ended prematurely. According to a report from New Zimbabwe, the club released him in May 2018 after just seven months, during which he scored only one goal.
The club released a statement at the time, which included:
“Entag El Harby have announced they are releasing nine of their players, namely Momen Gaber, Afrotto, Mohamed Mohsen Leila, Ahmed Sherwyda, Ahmed Saidy, Mohamed Essam, Ahmed El-Ish, Mohamed Khalifa and Abbas Amidu.”
Amidu also had a brief period with South African giants Kaizer Chiefs in 2012, though he left without making an official appearance for the club due to injuries.
The Legal Process Ahead
The former international forward now faces serious legal consequences. Drug trafficking charges in Zimbabwe carry severe penalties, including lengthy prison sentences.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police have not yet released further information regarding a court date or the progress of their investigation. The arrest marks a dramatic fall from grace for the former athlete, whose career once showed such promise on the football pitch.
