How the Fraud Was Carried Out

The accused — Manuel Makuvise (28), Kudzanai Learnmore Taraziva (28), Kudzaishe Shadreck Chakanyuka (42), and Joshua Nyaruwashe (24) — are facing fraud charges after abusing their insider positions.

Prosecutor Garry Sengweni told the court that the suspects accessed customer account details, created fake IDs, and processed SIM card replacements to seize control of EcoCash wallets.

First Victim: US$1 946 Stolen

On 29 April, the gang allegedly targeted an EcoCash account belonging to Eliah Nkomo. After obtaining his details, Chakanyuka reportedly created a fake ID carrying his own face but Nkomo’s information.

A SIM swap was then processed, cutting Nkomo off from his line. The group allegedly withdrew US$1 946 from his EcoCash account.

Second Victim: Another US$2 539 Vanishes

A similar scheme was executed on 10 May, targeting Lynace Phiri. Using the same method, the accused reportedly gained access to her EcoCash wallet and withdrew US$2 539.

Court Proceedings and Investigations

In total, the gang is accused of stealing US$4 485, with no money recovered so far.

The case was remanded to 19 September as police intensify investigations into what could be part of a wider EcoCash fraud syndicate.
