Four Robbers Gunned Down Following High-Speed Chase And Shoot-Out Near Norton Tollgate

Four gunmen were left dead and two police detectives hospitalised with serious injuries after a high-speed chase and shoot-out near Norton tollgate.

The operation was initiated after detectives from the CID Homicide Unit received credible intelligence on the gang’s movements. According to authorities, the officers located the suspects’ vehicle and initiated a pursuit.

The situation escalated dramatically when the criminals opened fire on the pursuing officers, sparking a fierce gun battle. Police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, provided a stark account of the event, stating,

“As the detectives were following, the suspects fired at them, resulting in a serious exchange of fire near Norton Tollgate.”

In the aftermath, police impounded the suspects’ silver Toyota Axio, which served as a mobile arsenal and evidence locker. A forensic search of the vehicle yielded two 9mm pistols, one identified as a Girsan model, with a total of three rounds of ammunition recovered.

Also found within the car were distinctive items of clothing: a pair of grey army green Relay shoes and a navy blue ‘Grey Wolf’ branded jacket. These seemingly mundane objects provided the critical breakthrough, directly linking the deceased to a prior violent crime.

Investigators swiftly connected the recovered apparel to a brazen armed robbery at a Harare hospital just days earlier, on September 30. Commissioner Nyathi confirmed the damning evidence, revealing,

“One of the deceased suspects was captured on CCTV footage during an armed robbery at a Harare hospital on September 30, wearing the same shoes and jacket.”

During that heist, the syndicate made off with US$1,833 in cash and airtime vouchers valued at US$140. Police now confidently attribute at least five other major robberies, including one in Njube, Bulawayo, where US$8,000 and an iPhone were stolen, to the same dismantled group.

Commissioner Nyathi concluded with a stern warning to other criminal elements, affirming the force’s resolve.
