Tagwirei To Build ‘World Class’ Complex At Glen View Area 8 Home Industry
Businessman and Zanu PF official Kudakwashe Tagwirei has announced ambitious plans to construct modern, world-class complexes at the Glen View Area 8 Complex and in Gazaland, Highfield. This initiative, revealed at a large political meeting, aims to transform the areas, particularly Glen View, which has been repeatedly devastated by fires. The new developments are promised to offer safe, regulated trading spaces for hundreds of small business owners who have faced immense losses.
The announcement was made at an inter-district meeting at Gwanzura Stadium. According to the Zimpapers Politics Hub, Tagwirei committed to funding the construction to support small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
“I will inject funding towards the construction of world-class complexes in Glen View Area 8 and Gazaland to support the SMEs,” Tagwirei told the audience. “This initiative aims to facilitate formal registration for small businesses.”
He further assured attendees that the government would assist with essential infrastructure for the new complexes, including road construction and access to clean water.
A History Of Heartbreak And Fire
The promise of redevelopment comes as a potential lifeline for traders at Glen View 8, a site synonymous with tragedy and resilience. Just months earlier, in August 2025, a fire ripped through the complex, destroying goods worth over US$100,000 (approx. R1.8 million). It was reported to be the 14th such incident at the site, with cumulative losses estimated at a staggering US$3 million (approx. R54 million).
In the aftermath of that blaze, the Sunday Mail captured the profound despair of carpenter Patrick Munemo, who had lost nearly everything.
“I have been a victim seven times already. I came here in 2009, but the fires started in 2015. Each time, I feel like I am back to square one,” Munemo lamented, after 17 of his L-shaped sofas, valued at over US$5,000 (approx. R90,000), were destroyed.
The cycle of loss has left traders in a state of perpetual uncertainty and frustration. Munemo highlighted the dire conditions that contribute to the risk.
“Even insurance companies tried to partner with us, but they fled, knowing the risks are too high. There is a 100 percent probability of fire here. Nothing is regulated and it is risky working in these conditions, yet we have nowhere else to go,” he said.
New Complexes And Community Support
Beyond the commercial complexes, Tagwirei’s announced plans include significant community investments. He pledged to build five clinics with maternity wards across several suburbs including Glen View, Glen Norah, Highfield, and Budiriro. He also launched a revolving fund of US$200,000 (approx. R3.6 million) for Zanu PF party leagues in the zone.
Addressing the critical water shortages, he announced plans to drill 80 solar-powered boreholes. Further direct support includes the distribution of 12,500 hamper packs as Christmas gifts to residents. In a separate gesture, Tagwirei presented US$75,000 (approx. R1.35 million) for the construction of a house for Daniel Furusa, a liberation war veteran, and provided US$10,000 (approx. R180,000) for sunscreen for people with albinism.
The government has previously acknowledged the urgent need for intervention at Glen View. Following the August 2025 fire, Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe confirmed that President Emmerson Mnangagwa had ordered the complex’s urgent reconstruction. Minister Garwe stated that work was expected to start in September 2025, with the goal of commissioning the completed complex by the first quarter of 2026.
