Fuel Relief for Motorists as ZERA Lowers Diesel and Blend Prices In ZiG

Zera has given fuel relief for motorists as it lowers Diesel and Blend ZIG prices for a specified period of time.

The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) has implemented new fuel pricing structures this week, bringing modest relief to consumers through reduced local currency rates while maintaining stable USD pricing.

Effective from August 8 through September 4, 2025, motorists will benefit from slightly lowered prices:

  • Diesel 50: Decreased from ZWG 41.63 to ZWG 41.40 per litre
  • Blend (E20): Reduced from ZWG 42.04 to ZWG 41.68 per litre

US dollar-denominated prices remain unchanged at $1.55 for Diesel 50 and $1.56 for Blend (E20).

Ethanol Blending Policy Continues

ZERA confirmed the continuation of Zimbabwe’s 20% ethanol blending mandate (E20), a policy first introduced in 2011 to promote sustainable biofuel usage. All fuel operators must comply with this blending ratio while maintaining transparent pricing displays at retail outlets.

Regulatory Framework

The pricing adjustments follow ZERA’s standard monthly review cycle based on the M-1 pricing model. While the authority sets maximum price ceilings, fuel retailers retain the flexibility to offer competitive pricing below these thresholds based on their operational advantages.

Consumers are encouraged to verify that stations properly display current pricing and adhere to the mandated E20 blending requirements. These measures ensure fair competition while maintaining fuel quality standards across Zimbabwe’s petroleum sector.

The decrease in fuel prices has been welcomed by many Zimbabweans, as it gives an incentive for purchases in local currency. This also shows that the government is enforcing fuel purchases in local currency, as opposed to before, when fuel stations refused local currency.

The slight price reduction comes amid ongoing efforts to stabilise Zimbabwe’s fuel market while supporting the nation’s biofuel production initiatives through consistent ethanol blending policies.
