South Africa’s television landscape is changing after Generations: The Legacy moved away from its famous 8 PM slot.
The popular soapie held the position for more than 30 years on SABC1.
However, the long-running drama will now feature in a different timeslot.
Entertainment commentator Phil Mphela (@PhilMphela) revealed the development on Saturday, 18 July 2026.
He confirmed that creator Mfundi Vundla’s production would no longer lead the channel’s evening lineup.
The move marks a major shift for one of Mzansi’s most recognised television shows.

Many fans believe declining viewership influenced the decision to move the soapie.
The change comes as Uzalo continues dominating South African television ratings.
The KwaZulu-Natal-based drama regularly attracts millions of viewers each episode.
Meanwhile, Generations: The Legacy remains one of SABC1’s biggest programmes.
However, it has struggled to maintain its former dominance in recent years.
The soapie currently sits behind Uzalo but remains ahead of Skeem Saam.
According to Mphela, SABC1’s soapies still attract strong audiences despite changing viewing habits.
He explained that the era of seven to 10 million viewers is over.
Nevertheless, the shows continue attracting between three and six million viewers.
Those numbers remain impressive because audiences now have more entertainment choices.
Streaming platforms and digital content have changed how South Africans consume television.
Fans react to Generations: The Legacy’s new television home
The announcement sparked mixed reactions from viewers across social media platforms.
Interestingly, some fans expected the show to be cancelled instead.
Others questioned whether the soapie still had enough popularity to continue.
@Bee_Maluleke admitted: “Here I was thinking the show was cancelled after reading the subheading… 
”
Similarly, @Louyander expressed surprise, writing: “Haybo, we still have this show?”
However, @Aubs_T_ shared a stronger opinion about the programme’s future.
“Oh God, this show needs to end for heaven’s sake”
Meanwhile, @ZiphoKhumalo3 criticised the show’s previous direction.
“I’m glad I played a part in its downfall. Mfundi thought he was bigger than viewers, still waiting for more of this.”
Despite the criticism, Generations: The Legacy remains a major part of South Africa’s television history.
The schedule change could represent a new chapter for the iconic soapie.
