A Gokwe man is set to spend his life in prison after the brutal murder of his girlfriend. Edviva Muchena, a 46-year-old local man, will spend the rest of his days behind bars after the High Court of Zimbabwe delivered a life imprisonment sentence for the murder of his 29-year-old girlfriend, Sambulelo Letha.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), which secured the conviction, laid out the chilling sequence of events that led to the young woman’s untimely death. The court heard how Muchena lay in wait for Ms. Letha as she was making her way home on the evening of 1 August 2025.
NPA Narrates Details Of The Gruesome Murder
The NPA revealed that the accused intercepted the victim at the Gokwe Old GMB Forest. What began as a confrontation over personal matters swiftly escalated into a scene of unimaginable violence. Muchena, described as the deceased’s boyfriend, was insistent on having a private discussion away from prying eyes. It was in this isolated setting that he produced a weapon, ending the argument in the most horrific way imaginable.

“The offender stabbed her multiple times in the neck with an Okapi knife, causing her to bleed to death at the scene,” the National Prosecuting Authority stated.
The sheer brutality of the attack, with multiple wounds focused on a vital area, left the victim with no chance of survival. The weapon was recovered nearby, a silent testament to the violence that transpired.
Community Alarm and the Grim Discovery
The first signs that something was terribly wrong emerged not from the forest, but from Ms. Letha’s home. When she failed to arrive at her destination, concerned family and community members raised the alarm. Their fears prompted a search, which led police officers from ZRP Gokwe to the grim discovery in the forest.
“Community members raised the alarm after the victim failed to arrive home,” confirmed the official account.
Officers attended the scene where they found the deceased’s body alongside the murder weapon. The scene painted a clear and devastating picture for the first responders, one that was later corroborated by a detailed medical examination.

The judicial process left no room for doubt regarding the nature of the crime. A post-mortem examination conducted at United Bulawayo Hospitals provided the clinical facts, confirming the cause of death as “acute cardiorespiratory failure, hemorrhagic shock, and lacerated neck vessels.” However, it was the court’s own assessment that delivered the final, damning characterisation of Muchena’s actions.
The Court described the attack as brutal, premeditated, and senseless, highlighting the particular vulnerability of the victim at the moment he chose to strike.
