Zimbabwe’s government is moving to tighten stadium safety after a Warriors supporter died at the National Sports Stadium.
The tragedy happened during Zimbabwe’s AFCON qualifier against the Democratic Republic of Congo on Monday.
Authorities are now investigating the events that led to the supporter’s death.
The Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture has also announced a review of stadium security.
Officials will examine how supporters enter and move around sporting venues.
They will also assess crowd control and emergency response procedures.
According to the ministry, some fans tried entering the stadium through unauthorised routes.
The situation reportedly escalated after some supporters broke down a gate.
Authorities then attempted to control and disperse the gathering.
However, the operation ended with one Warriors supporter losing his life.
Several other fans also suffered injuries during the incident.
Government launches investigation into stadium tragedy
Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Anselem Sanyatwe confirmed that a formal investigation is underway.
The government is working alongside several sporting and security authorities.
These include the Zimbabwe Republic Police, Sports and Recreation Commission and ZIFA.
Sanyatwe said officials want to establish exactly how the incident unfolded.
“The Government of Zimbabwe is working flat out with the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the Sports and Recreation Commission and ZIFA to ensure that this incident is fully and thoroughly investigated,” Sanyatwe said in a statement.
The investigation will therefore focus on the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Authorities also want to identify measures that could prevent similar incidents.
Meanwhile, the ministry said it was monitoring the injured supporters.
Sanyatwe also wished those injured a speedy and complete recovery.
The investigation could provide important answers about what happened inside and outside the stadium.
Stadium security set for major review
The government will now reassess several safety procedures at the National Sports Stadium.
Officials plan to strengthen crowd management systems at sporting events.
They will also review access controls and emergency response arrangements.
