Government Considers Private Ferries For Kariba Route As Mbuya Nehanda Death Toll Hits 94

Kariba Ferry Disaster Triggers New Government Move As Death Toll Hits 94

KARIBA — 19 August 2026 — The Government is considering allowing private ferries to operate on the Kariba-Chalala route after the Mbuya Nehanda disaster left communities facing transport difficulties, with the death toll now standing at 94.

The latest development comes as search teams continue looking for people who may still be missing following the ferry tragedy. National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that another body had been recovered.

“The death toll is now 94. The ZRP’s deployment of search teams will continue as efforts to locate any missing persons or bodies continue,” Nyathi said.

Private Ferries Considered For Kariba-Chalala Route

With the Mbuya Nehanda no longer available, authorities are looking at alternative vessels to restore the movement of passengers and supplies across the lake.

Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona said private operators could be allowed onto the route, but only after their vessels pass the required safety inspections and receive regulatory approval.

“We do not want to create another problem in trying to solve the current challenge. We have to make sure that the alternative transport is suitable and safe for passengers,” Mhona said.

Private operators have already offered vessels for consideration. The Silverstone ferry is reportedly among the options being assessed.

What Happens To Kariba Communities Now?

The Kariba-Chalala route is relied upon by communities that use lake transport to access essential supplies, services and economic activities.

The proposed involvement of private operators could help restore the connection while authorities continue dealing with the aftermath of the Mbuya Nehanda disaster.
