Government Gives Mighty Warriors US$2,700 Bonus Each at COSAFA Tournament

The Government has extended significant financial support to the Mighty Warriors currently competing at the 2026 COSAFA Women’s Championship in Polokwane, South Africa, with each player receiving a US$2,700 bonus.

The funds, courtesy of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, were handed over by the Deputy Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Honourable Emily Jesaya, upon her arrival in Polokwane.

President Responds to Players’ Welfare Concerns

Speaking after presenting the financial support, Minister Jesaya revealed that the gesture followed her visit to the team’s training camp, where she engaged the players in a lengthy discussion about their welfare needs.

When I visited the Mighty Warriors in camp, we had a lengthy conversation and I left with a clear picture of their needs,” she said. “I promised them that we needed to improve their welfare, so I went to the President and presented their case.

“I am glad we have a listening President. He came through and I am here to deliver his gift to the girls. Whether they win or lose, the girls are entitled to our support.”

While the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) will continue to cover players’ allowances, appearance fees and winning bonuses, the US$2,700 payment is a separate government-backed incentive.

Focus on Semi-Final Qualification

The women’s national team is taking part in the regional tournament in South Africa and received the financial boost ahead of their goalless draw against Zambia on Sunday.

The stalemate saw Zimbabwe maintain second place in their group, strengthening their chances of progressing to the semi-finals.

Under the tournament format, the top teams from all three groups will advance to the semi-finals, along with the best runner-up. Because Group C has three teams, results against the bottom-placed sides in Groups A and B will be disregarded in determining the best runner-up.

With morale lifted by the government’s support, the Mighty Warriors will be aiming to secure a place in the last four as the competition intensifies.
