Student Raped In Parked Kombi At Rezende Rank, Police Launch Manhunt
A 13-year-old Grade 7 pupil was raped inside a parked white Toyota Hiace kombi at the busy Rezende Parkade rank in Harare’s Central Business District, police have confirmed.
The shocking incident came to light after the young girl, who had initially remained silent, later confided in her school authorities following a visit by her uncle.
Lured After Touts Harassed Her
According to a statement issued by Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza on 5 August 2025, the learner had travelled into town to collect money from a relative.
“The complainant left home proceeding to town where she was supposed to collect her money at corner Leopold Takawira and Jason Moyo,” said Inspector Chakanza.
“Upon arrival, she was given cash and she immediately left stating that she wanted to go back home to finish her homework.”
It was during her return that she found herself at Rezende Parkade rank, where several touts reportedly began obstructing her.
“Whilst at the rank, the touts started blocking her way, obstructing her from entering a certain vehicle,” Chakanza explained.
“She was approached by the accused person, who purported that he wanted to help her. He ordered her into a parked, white Toyota Hiace where he locked and raped her once without protection.”
After committing the crime, the suspect fled the scene, leaving the minor locked inside the kombi.
Victim Stayed Silent Until Teacher’s Intervention
The girl went home but did not speak to anyone about what had happened. It was only when her uncle visited her school to ask why she had come home late that the truth began to emerge.
“The matter came to light when the complainant’s uncle went to her school to enquire why she returned home late,” said Chakanza.
“The complainant was interviewed by her teacher and that is when she revealed the rape.”
The learner was referred to the Adult Rape Clinic at Parirenyatwa Hospital for medical assessment and treatment.
Police Appeal For Public’s Help
As of Tuesday morning, police investigations were still ongoing. No arrest had been made at the time of publication.
Inspector Chakanza urged members of the public who may have witnessed the events or have information on the perpetrator’s identity to come forward.
“Police are investigating a rape case involving a Grade 7 learner at a rank along Rezende Street in the CBD,” he said.
“We appeal for information that may lead to the arrest of the perpetrator.”
Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact their nearest police station immediately.
The case has once again raised concerns about the vulnerability of children in public spaces and the ongoing problem of tout harassment at urban commuter ranks in Harare.
