A 38-year-old Gweru woman who scalded a one-year-old child with hot oil before burning the toddler’s back with a log has been sentenced to community service. Netsai Chitambira was convicted of unlawfully causing harm to the child in a case reportedly linked to a dispute with the toddler’s mother.

Chitambira was sentenced by Gweru magistrate Deon Chiroyi on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, to 315 hours of community service at the Gweru Military Museum. The case was reported by the Midlands-based newspaper The Mirror on 11 October 2026.

Gweru Woman Burnt Neighbour’s Toddler In May 2026

The court heard that the incidents occurred on 2 and 4 May 2026. Chitambira and the child’s family were neighbours who reportedly had a strained relationship.

On the afternoon of 2 May, Chitambira was cooking outside her home while the toddler and other children played near the fireplace.

The court heard that she threw hot oil onto the child, scalding the toddler’s leg. Two days later, she allegedly used a log to burn the child’s back.

The toddler’s mother subsequently noticed the injuries and reported the matter to the police.

Medical Report Submitted As Evidence

A medical report was compiled following the incident. The report formed part of the case concerning the injuries sustained by the child.

Christine Chidembo prosecuted the matter, while Magistrate Chiroyi handed down the sentence.

Chitambira was ordered to complete 315 hours of community service at the Gweru Military Museum.

The sentence brings the reported court proceedings to a conclusion, although the available information does not provide further details about the child’s recovery or whether additional court orders were issued.
