Harare City Council has highlighted significant improvements across several key sectors ahead of its 2027 budget.
The developments cover water supply, sanitation, healthcare, education and urban development.
Finance Committee chairperson Councillor Jubilation Shoko presented the progress during Thursday’s budget presentation at Town House.
“Your Worship, despite financial constraints, the City recorded notable progress in water and sanitation, public health, urban planning, education and institutional reform,” Cllr Shoko said.
Harare upgrades water infrastructure and healthcare services
Council has made progress in repairing its water distribution network and improving supply infrastructure.
According to Shoko, the City replaced 66 kilometres of water pipes against its 106-kilometre target.
It also installed 85,301 smart meters to improve water monitoring and billing accuracy.
Meanwhile, Council commissioned five pumps at Darwendale Pump Station, a major source of raw water for Harare and neighbouring towns.
These investments aim to reduce water losses while improving supply reliability.
The City has also prioritised healthcare improvements through clinic upgrades and modernisation.
Kuwadzana Polyclinic received upgrades, while Edith Opperman Clinic underwent refurbishment and equipment improvements.
Furthermore, Mabvuku Polyclinic has introduced emergency caesarean section services.
The development should help reduce pressure on major referral hospitals.
Council has also introduced electronic health records and digital environmental health reporting.
These systems aim to strengthen medical administration and improve healthcare service delivery.
Schools and community infrastructure receive attention
Beyond healthcare and water infrastructure, Council has continued investing in education and community facilities.
The City connected 30 council-owned schools and three libraries to the internet.
It has also continued constructing and renovating school facilities across Harare.
These projects form part of broader efforts to improve access to educational resources and essential community services.
