‘He knows football a lot’: Lekwane Rallies Behind Relebohile Mofokeng After Orlando Pirates Defeat
Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Aubrey Lekwane has come out strongly in support of youngster Relebohile Mofokeng following the Buccaneers’ costly 2-1 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns at the FNB Stadium.
The result has injected fresh drama into the Betway Premiership title race, with Sundowns closing the gap on Orlando Pirates to just three points while holding a game in hand.
But while some supporters questioned Mofokeng’s influence on the night, Lekwane believes the criticism misses the bigger picture.

Tactical Gamble That Didn’t Pay Off
In recent matches, Mofokeng had flourished in a central attacking midfield role, linking play intelligently and contributing directly to goals. His awareness between the lines and ability to arrive in dangerous spaces had added spark to Pirates’ attack.
Against Sundowns, however, coach Abdeslam Ouaddou opted for a tactical reshuffle. Mofokeng was moved away from the central areas and deployed in a wider role, while other attacking adjustments were made to accommodate a different structure.
The switch disrupted Pirates’ rhythm. Isolated at times and receiving limited service, Mofokeng struggled to impose himself in the way fans have grown accustomed to.
‘He Can’t Carry the Team’
Lekwane believes the young star should not be singled out.
According to the former Buccaneer, both Mofokeng and fellow attacker Oswin Appollis were starved of quality supply from midfield, forcing them to retreat deeper in search of the ball.
He further warned against burdening the 21-year-old with unrealistic expectations.
“You cannot expect him to carry the team,” Lekwane argued, stressing that experience still plays a crucial role at the highest level. While acknowledging Mofokeng’s football intelligence, he noted that development takes time and stability.
Pressure of a Tight Title Race
With the title race now finely balanced, every performance will come under scrutiny. Yet Lekwane insists young players need consistency in role and responsibility to grow.
The former midfielder concluded that while Mofokeng remains one of Pirates’ brightest prospects, patience will be key if the club hopes to maximise his potential in the long run.
