Herdboy Steals US$1,600 From Employer And Loses It Within An Hour Playing Feja Feja

A young herdboy stole money from his employer and lost it all within an hour playing feja feja. Anele Sibanda, aged 20, appeared before the Bulawayo Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, charged with theft after allegedly absconding with a significant sum of money from his employer. The court was presented with a tale of temptation, swift fortune, and even faster loss.

The prosecutor outlined that on the fourth of September, Sibanda’s employer, Rozilina Ndlovu, was engaged in conversation with a visitor at her homestead. Seizing an opportunity when Ndlovu momentarily stepped outside, Sibanda is alleged to have entered her bedroom and taken US$1,600 from a wardrobe. He then immediately departed for Bulawayo, leaving his duties and rural life behind.

Upon reaching the city, Sibanda did not seek accommodation or invest his ill-got gains. Instead, he headed straight for the informal gambling dens known locally as feja feja. There, he attempted to multiply his stolen capital, a decision that would prove disastrous. The prosecutor stated,

“The accused proceeded to gamble the money at a feja feja spot, where he lost US$1 000 in a single game, desperately trying to get a red card.”

This single act evaporated the majority of the stolen funds in a matter of moments.

Magistrate Itai Kagwere listened intently as the remainder of Sibanda’s spree was detailed. The funds that survived the gambling table were quickly dissipated on alcohol and the company of women. What was meant to be a new beginning rapidly devolved into a lesson in consequence.

The prosecutor noted,

“He then blew the rest on beer and prostitutes, leaving him with nothing after just a short period of his city adventure.”

In a statement read to the court, the complainant, Rozilina Ndlovu, expressed her shock and disappointment. She said,

“I treated him like one of my own children. To have him betray my trust in this manner for a few hours of feja feja and shupa ( is very painful. That money was for important household needs.”
