Here Is How Much Brazil and Argentina Wanted to Play Bafana Bafana
Bafana Bafana were close to securing high-profile international friendlies against global giants, but staggering appearance fees forced them to look elsewhere.
Head coach Hugo Broos revealed that both Brazil national football team and Argentina national football team had shown interest in facing South Africa, but their financial demands proved too steep.

The Price Tag for Football Giants
According to Broos, Brazil were willing to travel for a friendly match — but only for a fee of around $5 million. Argentina had made a similar proposal earlier, requesting approximately €5 million to play in Johannesburg.
“I spoke to Lydia [Monyepao], the CEO, and she told me that Brazil want to play against us. I said, ‘very good, why not?’ she replied, ‘Yeah they are asking for $5 million to come.’
A few months ago, Argentina also wanted to play in Johannesburg against us, for 5 million euros. You understand? It’s easy to say ‘Ah, why not that?’ So Panama is not coming free either, you have to pay also,” Broos said.
The figures, running into tens of millions of rand, placed the matches beyond reach for the South African Football Association, forcing officials to reconsider their options.
Panama Friendlies a Practical Choice
Instead of glamour ties, Bafana will now face Panama national football team in two international friendlies. While less high-profile, the fixtures are seen as strategically valuable.
Broos explained that Panama’s style closely mirrors that of Mexico national football team — one of South Africa’s upcoming opponents — making them ideal preparation.
The coach also noted that even these matches come at a cost, with Panama not travelling for free, highlighting the financial realities behind arranging international fixtures.
World Cup Preparations Take Priority
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup fast approaching, Bafana are focusing on practical preparation rather than prestige.
South Africa have been drawn in a challenging group alongside Mexico, South Korea national football team, and a yet-to-be-confirmed European side.
Broos indicated that the team is still exploring the possibility of adding another friendly in May, likely against opposition from Europe or Asia, as they fine-tune their readiness for the tournament.
Balancing Ambition and Budget
While matches against football powerhouses would have boosted both exposure and gate revenue, Broos acknowledged the financial limitations facing the association.
He pointed out that although packed stadiums could offset some costs, the upfront fees remain a major hurdle. For now, the focus remains on building a competitive squad within realistic means, even if it means missing out on headline-grabbing encounters.
