Former Zimbabwe captain Willard Katsande has spoken publicly for the first time about his departure from Eastern Region Division One side Grand Legacy, saying differences over the club’s direction and internal tensions made it impossible for him to continue.
Katsande’s exit was confirmed by Grand Legacy last week, bringing an end to his brief stint with the Murehwa-based club. The team has since appointed Paul Chimalizeni as its new head coach.

The Club Direction Wasn’t Good
Speaking to Soccer Laduma, the 40-year-old former midfielder said he became increasingly concerned about how the club was being run.
“The club direction wasn’t good,” he said.
Katsande also alleged that there were trust issues within his backroom staff, claiming someone in the technical team was reporting minor matters directly to the club president.
“I had a mole in the technical staff who would take petty things to the club President,” he added.
Recruitment Disputes Added To Frustrations
The former Warriors skipper said he had little influence over key football decisions, including player recruitment and changes to his technical bench.
According to Katsande, some of his proposals were rejected despite being made in the team’s best interests.
“I said, ‘Can we at least change the bench?’ and they didn’t want to. Also, player recruitment wasn’t done well; he wanted to handle all those things alone, with no recommendation from me,” Katsande continued.
He suggested the disagreements made it difficult to build the team he envisioned.
Another Short-Lived Coaching Spell
The Grand Legacy departure marks Katsande’s second coaching exit in just a few months.
In April, he resigned as Rangers FC head coach only 54 days after taking charge of the Northern Region Soccer League club.
At the time, Katsande said the club had failed to honour its financial commitments, claiming he had not received his salary or agreed sign-on fee.
He also criticised the living conditions provided by the club, saying they fell below professional standards. Katsande said repeated attempts to resolve the issues with management were unsuccessful, ultimately leading to his resignation.
