Here’s Why Coach Ouaddou Shifted Relebohile Mofokeng Into Number 10 Role at Orlando Pirates

Here’s Why Coach Ouaddou Shifted Relebohile Mofokeng Into Number 10 Role at Orlando Pirates

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has shed light on his tactical decision to field Relebohile Mofokeng in a central attacking role rather than on the wing, where he impressed last season.

Young Star Under Pressure

The 20-year-old attacker, who is the reigning PSL Young Player of the Season for the second consecutive campaign, has struggled to hit the heights expected of him this term. After eight appearances, he is yet to record a goal or an assist, leading to growing scrutiny from fans and pundits.

MTN8 Final Showed His Quality

Despite his quiet numbers, Mofokeng reminded the football fraternity of his ability during the MTN8 final against Stellenbosch FC last weekend.

His sharp vision and incisive passing unlocked Stellenbosch’s defence several times. It was his clever ball that led to Tshepang Moremi’s assist for Tshegofatso Mabasa in the 3-0 victory at Mbombela Stadium.

Ouaddou: “He Has 380 Degrees to Play”

Reviewing the match on SuperSport TV, Ouaddou explained why he moved Mofokeng inside.

When we decided to bring Rele in the middle, it was to give him more freedom, because on the side, yes, he can come inside, but he has only 180 degrees of possibility to play. When he comes inside, he has 380 degrees to play and to find the connection between the frontline.

“So, that was the idea, and I think he enjoys it because you have to give freedom to these kinds of players.

“I think he felt good in that game. He was excited to find a combination of his teammates. He knows exactly where they are.

“What I like about him is that before receiving the ball, he knows exactly what he wants to do,” coach Ouaddou said.

Focus Shifts to CAF Champions League

Mofokeng will now look to build on his MTN8 performance as part of the Bucs squad that has travelled to the Free State. Pirates face Lesotho outfit Lioli in the first leg of their preliminary CAF Champions League clash at Toyota Stadium on Saturday.
