Hospital Faces Charges After Amputated Leg Found At Chitungwiza Dump
A private Southerton hospital is facing charges after an amputated human leg and medical waste were discovered at a Chitungwiza dumping site. Police say the limb was mistakenly included in a consignment of waste taken away for disposal.
A woman searching the dump for recyclable plastics made the disturbing discovery last week. The partially burnt leg was wrapped in bandages, with syringes, gloves and other medical waste found nearby.
Police Probe Amputated Leg Linked To 71-Year-Old Patient
H-Metro reports that police established that the limb belonged to a 71-year-old man who had undergone an amputation below the knee after treatment for a diabetic foot ulcer.
The procedure was reportedly carried out in August. Police investigations indicate that on 6 September 2026, a hospital waste container containing the limb was mistakenly included among 29 bins handed to Rajiv Makaza for disposal.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed that investigations were continuing.
“Investigations are underway. The hospital will be charged for contravening Section 70(1) as read with Section 70(5) of the Environmental Management Act, Chapter 20:27 for unlawfully discharging, disposing of, causing or permitting the disposal of health-care waste in a manner that causes, or is likely to cause, pollution to the environment and ill health to persons.”
Human Leg Held At Chitungwiza Mortuary
The amputated limb has since been taken to Chitungwiza Central Hospital Mortuary while investigations continue.
The case centres on how the medical waste left the hospital and ended up at the dumping site. Police have indicated that the hospital will face charges under Zimbabwe’s environmental legislation.
The discovery has also highlighted how healthcare waste is handled, with the investigation now focused on establishing how the container was included in the waste consignment.
