“I Drank More Than One Beer”: Hugo Broos Reveals After Bafana Bafana’s Beer-Fueled Party Video Goes Viral
Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has defended the team’s jubilant post-match celebrations after officially qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup — breaking a 22-year absence from the global showpiece.
South Africa secured their spot at next year’s tournament with a commanding 3–0 victory over Rwanda last Tuesday. Their qualification was confirmed after Nigeria defeated Benin 4–0 on the same evening.
Pressure Release After High-Stakes Final Matches
Broos said the celebrations were not only a moment of joy but also a release of months of built-up pressure and uncertainty during the qualification campaign.
“I drank more than one beer. It was very nice, an explosion of emotions after the game and many hours after the game,” Broos told reporters on Thursday.
Points Deduction Made Journey Tougher
The Belgian tactician pointed to the controversial FIFA ruling that docked South Africa three points for fielding Teboho Mokoena — who was allegedly suspended — in a match against Lesotho in March. Broos believes the ruling disrupted their momentum and increased the pressure in the final stretch of qualifiers.
“Also with the players I think it was the right moment to do it [celebrate] and also because of the suspense in the last two games because we were in a very good position then suddenly, we were deducted the three points,” he added.
Broos hinted that the disciplinary decision was influenced by one of Bafana Bafana’s regional rivals, suggesting the issue was initially overlooked by FIFA before resurfacing months later.
Road to 2026 Begins
With qualification secured, attention now shifts to preparations for the World Cup in North America, where South Africa hopes to end their long-running struggle on the world stage and make a competitive impact.
