“I’m Not a Sangoma, I’m a Child of the Spirit”: Kelly Khumalo Sets Record Straight on Her Spirituality

Award-winning South African singer Kelly Khumalo has cleared the air on her spiritual identity.

She firmly rejected the label of sangoma.

“I’m Not a Sangoma,” Says Kelly Khumalo

In a heartfelt video, the star explained that while she is deeply spiritual, she does not align herself with traditional definitions that many have imposed on her over the years

“I’m not a sangoma. I’m just a child of the spirit,” Kelly Khumalo said, expressing frustration at being repeatedly referred to as one.

The singer acknowledged that she has undergone initiation processes but stressed that this does not automatically define her as a sangoma.

Instead, she prefers to describe herself as a spiritual healer who accesses and uses her gifts in her own way.

“When someone says that I’m a sangoma, I get annoyed. I’ve suppressed this for a while, but now I feel I should let people know,” she explained.

A Personal and Difficult Spiritual Journey

Khumalo opened up about the challenges she faced during her initiation experiences, revealing that the journey took a heavy physical and emotional toll on her.

She recalled being made to drink blood, an experience that left her severely ill and feeling burdened for years. According to the singer, it took a long time for her to recover and realign spiritually.

Ubungoma defeated me; let me just speak the honest truth,” she confessed, emphasising that the path was not meant for her.

Respect for Tradition, But Firm Boundaries

Despite her stance, Khumalo made it clear that she respects ubungoma and those who are genuinely called to it. However, she maintained that she is not umngoma, even after undergoing initiation four times.

She also criticised healers who initiate people without properly understanding or assessing their spiritual gifts, warning against forcing individuals into paths that do not suit them.

“Listen to Your Body and Spirit”

Khumalo urged people on spiritual journeys to trust their intuition and physical responses.

“Don’t force things if you can see that something is not for you. Your body speaks, your spirit talks. Listen to your body,” she advised.

She concluded by asking the public to stop boxing her into rigid spiritual categories, stating that her journey is unique and deeply personal.

“I’m just a woman with gifts, and I have access to them, and I use them,” she affirmed.
