Iran Defies Trump By Naming Mojtaba Khamenei As New Supreme Leader
Iran has delivered a stunning rebuke to Washington by naming Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the country’s new supreme leader, brushing aside explicit threats from US President Donald Trump, who had vowed to veto the appointment.
The cleric, 56, was elevated to the Islamic Republic’s highest position during a secretive session of the Assembly of Experts in Tehran on Sunday. The move comes just over a week after his father was killed in a US-Israeli strike on the capital on 28 February.
‘Decisive Vote’ For Continuity
State media announced the decision on Sunday evening, framing it as a necessary show of strength during a moment of national crisis. In an official statement, the assembly called on all Iranians to unite behind the new leader.
“Mojtaba Khamenei has been chosen through a decisive vote,” the statement carried by state media read. “We urge citizens across the country, especially the elites and intellectuals of the seminaries and universities, to pledge allegiance to the new leadership and safeguard unity at a critical moment for Iran.”
The announcement marks the first time since the 1979 Islamic revolution that the supreme leadership has passed directly from father to son, a development that critics say mirrors the dynastic system the revolution was founded to overthrow.
Trump’s Red Line Ignored
President Trump had spent the days leading up to the appointment drawing a firm red line against Mojtaba Khamenei’s succession. In an interview with Axios, the US president dismissed the influential cleric as unworthy of the role and insisted that Washington must have a seat at the table.
“Khamenei’s son is a lightweight,” Trump told Axios. “I have to be involved in the appointment.”
He doubled down on the demand in a subsequent interview with Reuters, warning that Tehran would be wasting its time trying to pick a successor without American oversight.
According to the Times of Israel, Trump suggested that any leader not approved by the US “was not going to last long.” When asked specifically about the appointment following the announcement, he was quoted as giving a terse response.
“We’ll see what happens.”
Regional Reactions And Retaliation
The elevation of Mojtaba Khamenei has drawn swift reactions from Iran’s allies and enemies alike. Yemen’s Houthi rebels, who are backed by Tehran, were quick to congratulate the new leader. In a statement released on Telegram, the group hailed the development as a strategic victory.
“We congratulate the Islamic Republic of Iran, its leadership and people, on the selection of Sayyid Mojtaba Khamenei as Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution at this important and pivotal juncture,” the Houthi statement read. “His selection is a new victory for the Islamic Revolution and a resounding blow to the enemies of the Islamic Republic and the enemies of the nation.”
On the battlefield, the response was immediate. The Israeli military announced it had launched a wave of strikes targeting “regime infrastructure” in central Iran on Monday. Meanwhile, Iranian state media showcased a projectile allegedly launched at Israel bearing a message of allegiance to the new leader. It bore the slogan, “At your command, Sayyid Mojtaba,” using an Islamic honorific.
Back home, Iran’s power structures have moved to consolidate behind the new supreme leader. Top security official Ali Larijani addressed the nation, calling for calm and unity.
“Mojtaba Khamenei could lead the country under the current sensitive conditions,” Larijani said.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) has reportedly signalled its readiness to follow him, and the speaker of parliament has described allegiance to the new leader as a religious and national duty.
However, the 56-year-old cleric, who has never held elected office and spent most of his life in his father’s shadow, now faces the immense challenge of navigating a country at war, an economy in tatters, and an international community questioning the legitimacy of his rise.
