‘It is irreversible’: Hugo Broos on his Bafana Bafana coaching career

Hugo Broos has confirmed that his coaching journey with Bafana Bafana has come to an end. The veteran manager insists his retirement decision will not change.

Earlier reports suggested the 74-year-old could extend his stay. Those rumours followed South Africa’s impressive run to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

However, the Belgian coach has now ended all speculation. He says he will not return to the touchline. Still, he remains interested in supporting South African football differently.

Hugo Broos confirms coaching retirement

Speaking to Belgian outlet Voetbalnieuws, Broos explained that he has no plans to reverse his decision.

“Will I continue as a coach after all? No, it is irreversible! If they need me for something else, perhaps in scouting: that is something else. But football is no longer going to be a part of my life 24 hours a day,” Broos was quoted as saying by Belgian outlet voetbalnieuws.

Although coaching is over, Broos left the door open for an advisory or scouting position. He believes he can still contribute without managing a team every day.

Bafana Bafana could keep Broos in a new role

Broos also revealed that he has already spoken with the president of the South African Football Association. According to him, discussions have focused on keeping him involved after his departure.

“I have already had a conversation with the chairman of the South African federation. He would like to keep me, but in a different role, as an advisor or something like that. I will return at the end of July to say a final farewell; I am curious to see what he will propose to me.”

Broos will officially leave after a memorable five-year spell with Bafana Bafana. During that period, he transformed the national team and secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Meanwhile, South African football officials are expected to continue talks with the experienced coach. Those discussions could determine whether he remains part of the national setup in an off-field capacity.
