Authorities have tightened security at the East London Magistrates Court. They expect large crowds ahead of Julius Malema’s appearance.
The court has summoned Malema for pre-sentencing proceedings. It follows his conviction for firing a gun in 2018.
Meanwhile, thousands of EFF supporters have gathered in East London. They are expected to march to the court.
On Thursday night, supporters held a vigil in the city. They wore red regalia, sang struggle songs, and carried placards.
Conviction tied to the Mdantsane anniversary rally
The conviction links to the EFF’s fifth anniversary celebrations in Mdantsane. The incident happened at Sisa Dukashe Stadium.
The court found Malema guilty on several charges. These include unlawful firearm and ammunition possession.
It also includes discharging a firearm in a built-up area. In addition, it includes reckless endangerment.
During the event, Malema fired a gun at the stadium. As a result, the case moved through the criminal courts.
EFF calls the case political as sentencing looms
EFF members say the case is politically motivated. They argue it aims to silence the party.
Therefore, the EFF has pledged support for Malema throughout proceedings. Malema has also signaled he will appeal any sentence.
He has strengthened his legal team with senior advocate Thembeka Ngcukayithobi. The court will now weigh prison against alternatives.
Ultimately, the pre-sentencing hearing will shape the next steps. It will guide whether he faces jail or another option.
