Jose Mourinho fumes after Real Betis loss over controversial VAR call

Jose Mourinho has questioned the officials after Real Madrid suffered defeat against Real Betis.

The Real Madrid boss accepted responsibility for his team’s failure to convert several attacking opportunities.

However, Mourinho strongly disagreed with the decision surrounding a controversial penalty incident.

“We lost to Betis because we didn’t convert our attacking opportunities into goals. Period. But the penalty… Why wasn’t it retaken?”

Mourinho questions VAR decision

Mourinho then turned his attention towards VAR and questioned why the penalty was not retaken.

“Well, because VAR doesn’t know the rules… or because they didn’t WANT to,” he said.

The Portuguese coach demanded answers from those responsible for overseeing the officials.

“This is a question I’d like the people in charge to answer. Why?”

Mourinho suggested two possible explanations for the decision, but neither satisfied him.

“If VAR didn’t order it retaken because they didn’t know the rules, they should just go home.”

“If they didn’t order it retaken because they didn’t want to, that’s even worse.”

Furthermore, Mourinho questioned why VAR failed to ask the referee to review the incident.

He believes the referee may not have realised the incident occurred inside the penalty area.

“I want to assume honesty and think that he didn’t know he was in the penalty area.”

However, Mourinho insisted VAR should have intervened if that was the case.

Mourinho also questions Vinicius booking

Despite his frustration, Mourinho refused to blame the defeat entirely on the controversial decision.

He admitted Real Madrid could have missed the retaken penalty anyway.

However, he also questioned a separate decision involving Real Madrid captain Vinicius Junior.

Mourinho wanted an explanation for Vinicius receiving a yellow card while approaching the referee.

“When Vinicius approached the referee and saw the card before he even reached him, I’d like to know why.”

He also questioned the treatment of captains seeking explanations from referees.

“Why are we always told that the captain has the right to politely approach the referee?”

Mourinho now wants officials to provide clear answers over both controversial decisions.
