Mix-Up Leaves Kariba Ferry Victim Unclaimed After Family Identifies Wrong Body
A mix-up over the identity of a victim from the Kariba ferry disaster has left one woman’s body unclaimed after a family initially collected it believing she was their missing relative.
The development comes as authorities continue efforts to account for victims of the tragedy, with the death toll now reaching 95 as recovery operations continue.
Family Returns Body After Identification Mix-Up
The Civil Protection Unit is appealing for help to identify the woman, believed to be aged slightly above 20.
Local Government Services director for Mashonaland West Province Cecilia Chitiyo said the bodies that had remained at Kariba District Hospital had been identified and collected, but one was later returned.
“The family later said the body was not that of their relative and returned it, meaning that we now have one unclaimed body,” Chitiyo said.
The woman was wearing a grey hoodie branded “New York Police Department”, a black jean skirt, black shoes and black skin-tight leggings.
Families with relatives still missing after the disaster who recognise the description have been urged to visit the Kariba Hospital mortuary.
Search Continues For Kariba Ferry Victims
The latest development comes as divers continue searching an area around Long Island and King’s Camp for victims.
The tragedy has left authorities working to identify recovered bodies while search teams continue operations in the lake.
With the death toll now standing at 95, the identification of every victim remains a key part of the recovery effort.
