Kaya 959 has severed all ties with breakfast show content provider, Sol Phenduka. The termination, confirmed to be effective immediately, follows an internal review into Phenduka’s recent public conduct, specifically his involvement in a vodcast where misogynistic comments were directed at media personality Minnie Dlamini.
The station’s Acting Managing Executive, Dave Tiltmann, stated that the decision was unavoidable given the severe breach of the station’s core principles. He emphasised that the behaviour in question was utterly irreconcilable with the values Kaya 959 stands for.
Kaya 959 Cites Breach of Trust and Contract While Firing Sol Phenduka
Tiltmann revealed that this was not the first time Phenduka’s off-air behaviour had caused concern for the station’s management. He confirmed that the presenter had previously provided written assurances that such incidents would not happen again, making this latest controversy a definitive breach of his independent contractor agreement.

“Kaya 959 cannot and will not condone comments made on the MacG Vodcast, where Sol Phenduka is an integral part of the presenting team,” Tiltmann said. “Misogynistic remarks made about actress Minnie Dlamini were unacceptable and inconsistent with respect owed to women. As a content provider of our flagship breakfast show, his alignment with comments made on the vodcast, does not reflect who we are as a station, nor what our listeners expect of us.”
Upholding Values “Not Open to Compromise”
The acting boss was unequivocal about the non-negotiable nature of the station’s ethos. The station’s agreement with independent contractors allows for immediate termination in cases where an individual’s actions bring the station into disrepute.
“Trust, integrity, accountability, respect, and inclusivity are the foundations of Kaya 959,” Tiltmann asserted. “They guide everything we do on air, online and off air. We are answerable to our listeners, and when conduct falls short, we act decisively.”
