Knowledge Musona Hit With Fine Following Durban Red Card
Warriors captain Knowledge Musona has been sanctioned by FIFA after his controversial sending off in Zimbabwe’s 2026 World Cup Qualifier against South Africa in October.
The disciplinary decision has now been confirmed, putting an end to speculation over the consequences of the incident.
Incident That Triggered the Sanction
Musona was dismissed in the second half of the match at Moses Mabhida Stadium after receiving a second yellow card. The booking stemmed from an on-field altercation, and the referee’s decision left Zimbabwe to finish the match with ten men.
The expulsion came at a time when Zimbabwe were pushing to stay competitive in the Group C encounter.
FIFA Cites Unsporting Behaviour
According to Soccer24, following a review, FIFA ruled that the 35-year-old forward’s conduct fell under unsporting behaviour, referencing Article 14 and 14.1(b) of the Disciplinary Code.
The ruling carries financial and match-related consequences.
Musona has been ordered to pay 5,000 Swiss francs (around US$6,200). The sanction is in line with FIFA’s disciplinary guidelines for offences deemed to undermine the spirit of fair play.
Suspension Already Served
Along with the fine, Musona received a one-match ban. He sat out Zimbabwe’s subsequent qualifier against Lesotho later in the same international window, meaning he has already completed the suspension.
Fans React to Musona’s FIFA Fine
The news of Knowledge Musona’s US$6,200 fine sparked strong reactions online, with many football fans questioning the fairness and purpose of the penalty. Some supporters expressed frustration, arguing that the fine feels excessive, especially considering the economic realities faced by African players and national football associations. Others pointed out that red cards are a normal part of the game and questioned why a hefty financial punishment was necessary.
