Kombi Driver Who Beat Up Police Officer Sentenced to 30 Months Behind Bars, Licence Cancelled
A 23-year-old kombi driver has been sentenced to 30 months in prison after a dramatic incident in central Harare where he endangered lives, defied police orders, and assaulted a law enforcement officer.
Chaos at Harare Intersection as Kombi Driver Defies Traffic Lights
According to B-Metro, the incident happened on September 4 when Malvern Last Chiutsi ignored a red light at the bustling intersection of Leopold Takawira Street and Jason Moyo Avenue. He dangerously cut across traffic in his Nissan NV350, forcing other motorists and passengers into harm’s way.
Cop Attacked and Thrown Out of Vehicle
When police officers attempted to stop him, a sergeant jumped into the kombi to enforce the arrest.
Instead of pulling over, Chiutsi sped off with the officer still inside. The chase stretched into Avondale, where the driver stopped briefly, punched the officer in the face, and, with assistance from his conductor, shoved him out of the moving vehicle before fleeing again. The officer was rushed to Parirenyatwa Hospital for medical treatment.

Arrest and Charges
Chiutsi was later arrested and brought before the courts on three counts. For reckless driving, he received a 24-month jail sentence and lost his Class 2 driver’s licence. For assaulting a police officer, he was sentenced to 12 months, with six months suspended for five years. He was also fined US$100 or given the option of two months in jail for failing to comply with police instructions.
Court Sends Strong Message
The ruling sends a stern warning to reckless kombi drivers in Harare, where defiance of road rules and confrontations with law enforcement have become a growing concern.
Authorities hope the sentence will serve as a deterrent against further lawlessness on the capital’s busy streets.
