Gayton McKenzie strongly responded to Wayne Rooney’s recent comments about the 2010 World Cup. The Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture criticised Rooney’s negative remarks about South Africa.
Rooney described the country as the “worst” World Cup host. Meanwhile, the comments surfaced months before the next World Cup in North America.

Rooney also criticised the atmosphere and fan presence during matches.
He said: “We were travelling to the USA game, the first game. [While] we were driving to the game, it was pitch black, there’s no fans there.
“The way you normally go to welcome the fans, [the atmosphere], it was nothing.
“It just didn’t feel like a World Cup at all.”
At the time, England struggled throughout the tournament. They recorded draws against the USA and Algeria. They secured one win against Slovenia.
However, Germany eliminated England with a 4-1 victory in the round of 16.
If I got knocked out 4-1 by Germany in the round of 16 I would have also thought it was a horrible World Cup. Go kick a ball instead of trying to kick Africa. Loser

Furthermore, McKenzie defended South Africa’s football pride.

Ultimately, his response highlighted strong national pride and support for South African football.
