A Harare woman has been left devastated after a brazen thief broke into her home and stole a staggering US$20,000 (approximately R380,000) that she had hidden inside a wardrobe. The incident occurred on Sunday, September 21, 2025, while the 39-year-old resident of Madokero was attending a church service, returning at around 2 pm to discover the shocking theft.
Patience Satuma had concealed the substantial amount of cash inside a jacket that was stored within her bedroom wardrobe. According to the Herald, she made the grim discovery upon her return from worship. Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed that an investigation is now underway.
Police Confirm Theft And Issue Warning
Inspector Chakanza provided official details of the case, urging the public to learn from this unfortunate event. He emphasised the dangers of keeping large sums of money in domestic or business premises.
“Police are investigating an unlawful entry and theft case involving cash in a house at Madokero. The total value stolen is US$20,000 and nothing was recovered,” said Insp Chakanza.
The police spokesperson’s statement highlights the finality of the loss, with no immediate leads or recoveries reported.
The brazen nature of the crime, which occurred in broad daylight on a Sunday when many were at church, suggests that the thief or thieves may have been aware of the homeowner’s movements and the hidden fortune.
For Patience Satuma, the spiritual solace of a church service was cruelly replaced by the violation of her home and the disappearance of her savings.
