Zimbabwean football clubs are set to keep more matchday income after Cabinet approved major levy reductions.
The reforms aim to ease financial pressure on clubs and strengthen their ability to generate sustainable revenue.
Information Minister Zhemu Soda announced the changes during Tuesday’s post-Cabinet media briefing.
The new structure will cut several charges imposed on football matchday earnings.
Football levies face major cuts
The Sport and Recreation Commission (SRC) levy will fall from six percent to three percent.
Similarly, the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) levy will drop from six percent to three percent.
Meanwhile, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) will receive a reduced levy from matchday revenue.
Its charge will decrease from 10 percent of net revenue to four percent.
Local authorities will also reduce their venue hire levy from 15 percent to 10 percent.
The new rates will take effect after authorities complete the required statutory changes.
Clubs set to retain more matchday revenue
The reforms could significantly improve clubs’ financial positions across Zimbabwe.
Clubs have repeatedly criticised the previous system for taking a large share of matchday earnings.
Now, teams will have greater access to funds generated through ticket sales and attendance.
They can use the additional income to support players and cover operational expenses.
Furthermore, clubs could invest more money into long-term development programmes.
Under the previous structure, combined matchday deductions reached 37 percent.
The new system will reduce the total deductions to 20 percent.
That represents a 17 percentage-point reduction in the overall levy burden.
In relative terms, clubs will face approximately 46 percent lower combined levies.
The changes therefore mark a significant shift in how matchday revenue is distributed.
New levy structure
- SRC levy: 6% → 3%
- ZIFA levy: 6% → 3%
- PSL levy: 10% → 4%
