Makhadzi And Her Team Safe In Botswana After South African High Commission Intervention

Makhadzi’s stay in Botswana has taken a new turn after South African diplomatic officials stepped in to assist the musician and her team amid a dispute with a local promoter.

The intervention saw the award-winning singer visit the South African High Commission in Gaborone on Tuesday, 3 November. She and her team were subsequently able to return to their hotel, with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) confirming that they were safe.

DIRCO Deputy Director-General for Public Diplomacy Clayson Monyela confirmed the development to MDN News, saying officials were working to address the disagreement.

What Led To Makhadzi Seeking Diplomatic Assistance?

The diplomatic intervention came after Makhadzi publicly described difficulties she was experiencing in Botswana, where she had travelled for a performance.

In a video circulated on social media, the singer claimed that she had been unable to leave the country since Saturday, 31 October, after her passport, vehicle and personal belongings were allegedly taken.

She recounted an encounter with two men who demanded her passport but, according to her account, did not identify themselves or produce documents showing that they had the authority to do so.

The situation reportedly left her without access to the travel documents she needed to return to South Africa.

Promoter Dispute Behind The Standoff

The disagreement has drawn attention to Makhadzi’s business arrangements in Botswana, particularly her dealings with promoter Gilbert Seagile of Gilbert Promotions.

Seagile has reportedly been involved in arranging the musician’s bookings and handling her business dealings in Botswana since 2023.

The current disagreement is understood to involve financial and contractual arrangements relating to earlier performances, as well as promotional work for Makhadzi’s upcoming One Woman Show.

However, the exact terms of the agreements and what each party believes is owed remain unclear.
