Man Arrested For Axe Attack On Wife, Lands Child Marriage Charges As A Bonus

A Harare man has been arrested after an axe attack on his wife and landed child marriage charges on top of attempted murder. Tafadzwa Mutsiki, a 22-year-old from Epworth, stands accused of the attempted murder of his young wife, whom he allegedly attacked with an axe, partially severing her ear.

The case, heard in the Harare Magistrate’s Courts, has been deemed so serious that the presiding magistrate has recommended it be heard in a higher court.

Mutsiki appeared before Magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa, who deferred the matter due to the severity of the accusations. The magistrate stated that Mutsiki should apply for bail at the High Court or be indicted for trial there. He is expected to return to court on October 13th. Prosecutor Ms Mercy Musamvi outlined the shocking details of the attack, which occurred last Wednesday at a residence in Epworth.

The court heard that the violent episode began with a seemingly mundane request. Prosecutor Musamvi recounted the events, stating,

“It is alleged that on this day, the accused instructed his wife, aged 17, to prepare him sadza.”

While the young woman was cooking, the situation escalated dramatically. The prosecutor continued,

“The accused then took an axe and struck her several times on her right ear with the weapon.”

The attack left the teenage victim lying in a pool of her own blood. In a further act of cruelty, Mutsiki is alleged to have subjected her to a torrent of verbal abuse as she lay injured on the ground. The court was also informed that this was not the beginning of their troubled union, revealing a deeply concerning background to the relationship.

Child Bride Allegations Compound the Case

Adding a deeply disturbing layer to the violent assault, Tafadzwa Mutsiki is also facing a separate charge of marrying a minor. In a poignant revelation, the prosecutor informed the court,

“The accused impregnated the complainant in the year 2022.”

The child born from that pregnancy is now one year and eight months old, meaning the girl was just 15 or 16 years old when she became a mother. This fact directly contravenes the laws of Zimbabwe, which stipulate that an individual must be at least 18 years old to enter into a marriage.

The case has been adjourned, with the accused remanded in custody pending his next appearance.
