Manhunt Underway After Two Convicted Criminals Escape Mutimurefu Prison

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has launched a nationwide search for two prisoners who escaped from Mutimurefu Prison.

The escape happened on Saturday, 8 August 2026, following court appearances in Masvingo.

Police identified the fugitives as Tafadzwa Janyure Zimirenyika, 27, and James Masunda, 34.

Authorities have urged members of the public to provide any information that could help locate the pair.

People with information can visit their nearest police station.

They can also contact the ZRP National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631.

Alternatively, members of the public can send information through WhatsApp on 0712 800107.

Prisoners escaped after court appearances

According to the Masvingo Mirror, both men had attended separate court proceedings before their escape.

Janyure was appearing in connection with another robbery case at the High Court.

Meanwhile, Masunda attended court as a witness in a separate matter.

The two prisoners later breached security at Mutimurefu Prison.

They reportedly escaped through the facility’s perimeter fence after breaking out of their cells.

Janyure faces multiple serious charges

Janyure is serving a life sentence alongside an additional 70 years in prison.

He was convicted of murder, attempted murder, armed robbery and rape.

He also faces several additional charges currently before the High Court.

Masunda, meanwhile, is serving a 20-year prison sentence.

Police continue searching for both men following their escape.

Authorities are appealing for public assistance as efforts to recapture the fugitives continue.
