“We Haven’t Worked Together”: Marshall Munetsi Breaks His Silence on His Relationship With Warriors Coach
Zimbabwean footballer Marshall Munetsi has broken his silence on his relationship with national team coach Marian Marinica.
He admitted that the two currently do not have a working relationship following his exclusion from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) squad.
Munetsi’s absence from the tournament sparked widespread debate, with questions raised over whether the midfielder was unfairly overlooked despite being one of Zimbabwe’s most experienced players.

AFCON Snub Fuels Speculation
After being left out of the AFCON squad, Munetsi suggested that his omission may not have been purely based on injury concerns. He maintained that his injury was not severe enough to rule him out of the competition and hinted at the possibility of underlying reasons behind the decision.
ZIFA, however, moved swiftly to back Marinica, insisting that the midfielder was excluded strictly on medical grounds and not for any other reasons.

Speaking on Robert Marawa’s AFCON Daily Show on Netflix seen by Soccer24, Munetsi revealed that he has had minimal contact with Marinica since the coach’s appointment late last year.
According to the France-based midfielder, the pair have only spoken once on the phone and have never met face-to-face, making it difficult to establish any form of working relationship.
Munetsi explained that without time to interact, plan, or work together, it would be unfair to describe their connection as a coach-player relationship.
Vice-Captain Wanted to Contribute
Reflecting on his role within the national team setup, Munetsi admitted disappointment at missing the opportunity to contribute his experience, especially as a senior player.
He noted that while he respected the decisions made, he believed players in leadership positions should at least be afforded the chance to prove their fitness and value to the team.
