Milton High Teacher Accused Of Abusing Students Cleared Of All Charges
A male teacher at Milton High School in Bulawayo, who faced serious accusations of improper conduct with students, has been found not guilty on all counts. Bulawayo magistrate Ms Beverly Madzikatire acquitted Tyson Lunga, stating the case against him lacked merit.
Allegations Of A Coordinated Conspiracy
The 36-year-old teacher was initially arrested in June 2025 and granted US$300 (approx. R5,400) bail. He faced six charges related to performing indecent acts with young persons. The prosecution, led by the National Prosecuting Authority’s Nkanyezi Xaba, had alleged that Lunga targeted four male students aged between 15 and 17. The accusations included making sexual advances, offering money for sexual favours, and discussing sexual preferences. Specific claims stated he offered one boy US$10 (approx. R180) to sleep with him and another US$50 (approx. R900) for intimacy.
However, in his defence, Lunga’s lawyer, Ms Constance Mathaba of Makiya and Partners, argued that these allegations were part of a malicious plot.
The Chronicle reports that she stated that two other teachers fabricated the claims after Lunga was transferred to Milton High School in September 2024. Ms Mathaba told the court that her client had been the subject of false rumours about his sexuality even before his transfer.
Ms Mathaba said: “The allegations lacked merit as most of them occurred at unknown locations and dates. They were formulated by two teachers after he was transferred from another school in September last year.”
A Case Built On Hearsay Collapses
During the court proceedings, the magistrate noted critical flaws in the prosecution’s case. Ms Madzikatire ruled that the allegations were not made in a timely or voluntary manner. Furthermore, the court heard that the students allegedly involved failed to present key evidence, such as the sexually explicit messages they claimed to have received from the teacher.
In delivering her verdict, magistrate Ms Beverly Madzikatire stated that the allegations “lacked merit because they were not made in a timely and voluntary manner. They claimed that he sent them sexually explicit messages, which they also failed to present in court.”
The defence maintained that Lunga had proactively tried to stop the rumours by filing an official complaint with the school head, which he felt was ignored. Ms Mathaba successfully argued that all six charges were the direct result of a conspiracy against her client, leading to his full acquittal on August 28, 2025.
