Mnangagwa Approves Recall of Chief Charumbira and Two Other Chiefs

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has approved the recall of three traditional leaders from the National Council of Chiefs. The decision could lead to their removal from the Senate.

The affected chiefs are Fortune Charumbira, Rangarirai Bwawanda and Feleni Chauke. Charumbira serves as the council’s deputy president, while Bwawanda is known as Chief Nhema of Zaka. Chauke, meanwhile, serves as Chief Chitanga of Mwenezi.

Local Government and Public Works Ministry Permanent Secretary Tafadzwa Muguti announced the development in Harare. He addressed provincial chiefs from across Zimbabwe during a meeting on Tuesday, 13 October.

Muguti said the President approved the recalls following a recommendation from the Masvingo Provincial Chiefs Assembly.

The assembly had passed a vote of no confidence against the three traditional leaders. It accused them of undermining presidential authority, although Muguti did not disclose specific details.

However, the announcement has raised questions about the future of the affected chiefs within the council and the Senate.

Chief Mtshane Khumalo Reacts to the Development

National Council of Chiefs president Chief Mtshane Khumalo said he was unaware of the recalls when contacted by the Masvingo Mirror.

Khumalo explained that he was out of office when the development emerged. He also expressed concern about the possible approval of the recalls.

He told the publication that it would be disastrous if they were approved.
