Highlanders And Dynamos’ Financial Future Raises Alarm As MP Makes Startling Government Appeal
A Zimbabwean lawmaker has proposed an unusual sponsorship arrangement to protect Highlanders and Dynamos from financial difficulties. Nkulumane MP Freedom Murechu wants two state-owned companies to step in and support the country’s football giants.
Murechu believes ZINARA should sponsor Highlanders, while telecommunications company NetOne should take responsibility for funding Dynamos. He warned that both clubs could face relegation if their financial challenges are not addressed.
MP Proposes ZINARA And NetOne Sponsorship For Highlanders And Dynamos
Murechu made the proposal on Friday, 30 October 2026, while speaking at the Pre-Budget Seminar in Bulawayo.
He pointed out that most Premier Soccer League clubs receive corporate sponsorship, leaving Highlanders and Dynamos without comparable institutional backing.
The MP said:
“If we’re not careful, sooner rather than later, Highlanders and Dynamos could be relegated.
“As a country, we cannot afford to see these two teams relegated.”
He suggested that government-owned companies could enter long-term sponsorship agreements with the clubs.
Murechu added:
“For instance, Highlanders can be sponsored by ZINARA and Dynamos sponsored by NetOne.”
Highlanders And Dynamos Face Growing Financial Pressures
The lawmaker argued that the clubs represent more than football, given their historical significance and enormous supporter bases.
“These two teams do not represent just football, but they are a culture on their own,” he said.
He also warned against leaving their survival dependent on individual benefactors.
Dynamos is majority-owned by Bernard Marriot-Lusengo, while Highlanders operates as a social club.
Both clubs face the financial demands of running competitive football teams, including players’ salaries, transport, accommodation and competition expenses.
Murechu’s proposal places the question of institutional sponsorship firmly on the government’s pre-budget agenda. However, no sponsorship agreement involving ZINARA, NetOne or the two clubs was announced at the seminar.
