The director of Munenzva Bus company has stepped forward to directly address mounting speculation surrounding driver fatigue. Itai Munenzva, speaking from the company’s headquarters, issued a heartfelt message of condolence while staunchly defending the operational procedures that were in place for the ill-fated journey to South Africa. The accident, which saw the bus overturn near Rutenga, has sparked intense discussion on social media, with many users questioning whether the driver had sufficient rest before embarking on the return leg of a long-distance route.
Mr Munenzva moved to set the record straight, providing a detailed timeline of the driver’s activities in the days leading up to the tragedy. He stated,
“Joe Chikuvadze left Cape Town last Thursday and arrived back in Harare in the early hours of Saturday morning. He was then given the entire day on Saturday to rest before he was scheduled to drive again on Sunday.”

The company director was keen to stress that the investigation into the precise cause of the accident is now in the hands of the authorities. He expressed the company’s full cooperation and urged the public against drawing premature conclusions.
“We are truly sorry for the loss of lives and the injuries sustained by others on our bus,” Munenzva said. “We want to give the police time to investigate the cause of the accident. The bus is currently at the Vehicle Inspection Department where we want them to conduct all necessary checks.”
This move appears to be an effort to ensure complete transparency as the probe continues.

While Munenzva Buses maintains that fatigue was not a factor, sources within the long-distance bus industry have hinted at the immense commercial pressures that operators face, particularly during peak travel seasons. One source, who wished to remain anonymous, commented on the bustling Harare to Johannesburg and Cape Town corridor.
“We are getting into the busy season for bus companies, and this exerts some pressure on the operators as they want to take full advantage of the business,” the source revealed. “There is a lot of activity on these profitable routes. While I don’t have clear details of what happened in this case, I have seen the claims on social media that the driver was not given enough time to rest.”
