‘My father was a member of the ANC’: Proteas star reveals

Former Proteas batsman Rassie van der Dussen explained his decision to take the knee in 2021. He supported the Black Lives Matter movement during the ICC T20 World Cup.

The 37-year-old was among few white South African players who took the knee. He did so during the Proteas’ opening match.

However, controversy soon overshadowed the team’s campaign. Quinton de Kock refused to take the knee initially. He then withdrew from the match against West Indies.

Later, De Kock apologised and changed his stance. He agreed to take the knee in future matches. He criticised Cricket South Africa’s late directive before the game.

Upbringing and Values

Van der Dussen said his decision came from personal beliefs. He linked it to his upbringing and family values.

Speaking to Thabiso Mosia on Radio 2000, he shared his background. He revealed his father belonged to the African National Congress.

“I’ve never changed as a person. I was lucky to be brought up in a liberal household. My dad was a member of the ANC. We were raised with an objective view of the world,” Rassie said.

“That’s why I didn’t think twice about supporting the Black Lives Matter movement in 2021.”

Impact, Reflection, and Retirement

Van der Dussen said the response to his action still matters. He values the positive feedback he continues to receive.

“It is heartwarming to still see the impact it made on people and that they still speak about it. As an Afrikaner white man, to receive feedback like that is very special for me.”

He also stressed the importance of open dialogue in his family. He and his brothers often discussed South Africa’s history.

“We are four brothers, and I’m grateful we were brought up with a balanced view. We were able to question things and be honest about where we come from as a society and the work that still lies ahead to correct the wrongs of the past,” he added.

Earlier this week, van der Dussen retired from international cricket. He ended a distinguished seven-year career. He remained one of South Africa’s most reliable top-order batters.
