Vehicle Safety Alert Issued as Jeep and Kia Announce Major Recalls in South Africa

The recalls, submitted by Stellantis South Africa and Kia South Africa, affect thousands of motorists nationwide.

Over 300 Jeep Wranglers Pulled for Airbag Risk
Stellantis has confirmed a recall of 323 Jeep Wrangler units manufactured between 2016 and 2018.
The automaker says a build-up of dust within the clockspring mechanism could disrupt the airbag system.
The defect may trigger the airbag warning light but, in more severe cases, could stop the driver’s airbag from deploying during an accident—posing a significant safety risk.
According to the supplier, the dust inside the clockspring could compromise airbag circuit(s), causing illumination of the airbag warning light and or a non-deployment of the driver’s airbag during a crash. The impacted Wranglers were sold nationally during 2016 and discontinued in 2018,” read the statement from The National Consumer Commission (NCC) seen by Kaya959.

Kia Orders Nationwide Recall of 18,600 Vehicles
In a separate notice, Kia South Africa has called back 18,600 vehicles spanning five popular models sold between 2009 and 2015.
The affected range includes the Sportage, Sorento, Optima, Cerato, and Soul.
The issue centres on a faulty ABS fuse that may cause the braking system to malfunction.
A failure could increase stopping distances and, in rare instances, lead to heat damage in the engine compartment.
Consumers Urged to Book Free Repairs
The NCC has appealed to all affected owners to act immediately by scheduling inspections at authorised dealerships.
All repair work will be completed free of charge, and authorities emphasise that delays could put motorists and passengers at risk.
