“Nigerian” Accent and R100K Promises: Deepfake AI-Generated Video of Siya Kolisi Causes Stir
An AI-generated video featuring the image of Springbok captain Siya Kolisi has sparked a buzz on social media.
The video clip, which is circulating on the X platform (formerly Twitter), shows what appears to be Kolisi encouraging viewers to participate in an investment scheme.
However, it is clear that the video is not real. The deepfake uses Kolisi’s image and voice in a misleading manner, with the scammer speaking in a Nigerian accent and making grand promises of financial gain.
R100K Returns for R4,400 Investment?
In the Al-generated video clip, the fake “Siya Kolisi” claims:
“I guarantee that everyone who registers this month and invests the minimum amount of R4 400 will be able to earn their first R100 000.”
Trying to sound convincing, the AI-generated voice adds:
“I have no need to lie. I use this project myself, from which I receive additional high income. It is completely transparent, legal, and has already helped thousands of people around the country.”
Social Media Buzzes with Reactions
The video has gone viral, with many users reacting with a mix of humour and alarm. Some were amused by the AI-generated accent and bizarre nature of the scam, while others expressed concern that such deepfakes could easily mislead vulnerable individuals into parting with their money.
Here are some of the reactions;
