Nine Chinese Nationals Fined for Cocaine Use Now Set for Deportation

The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) has confirmed that nine Chinese nationals convicted of using a dangerous drug are awaiting deportation.

The announcement follows widespread public outrage over what many Zimbabweans viewed as lenient sentences handed down in the case.

Public Anger Over Light Sentences

The controversy stems from a Harare raid on 3 September 2025, where police reportedly recovered cocaine, methamphetamine, and other substances at a party.

The nine suspects were arrested, appeared in court the following day, and were fined just US$150 (about R2,700) each, with an option of a six-month prison sentence.

The sentence sparked anger across the country, with many questioning why such a serious offence was met with what they considered a trivial penalty.

NPAZ Statement on Case

In a statement titled “Sentencing of Nine Chinese Nationals for Use of a Dangerous Drug”, the NPAZ acknowledged public concern and reaffirmed its commitment to fair prosecution of all cases.

“The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) is aware of the public’s concern regarding the sentence handed down in the case involving nine Chinese nationals who pleaded guilty to using dangerous drugs (cocaine). We are taking this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to the diligent and fair prosecution of all criminal cases,” the statement read.

The authority stressed that all offenders, regardless of nationality, will be held accountable under Zimbabwean law. It also confirmed that the nine convicted individuals are currently awaiting deportation.

“The NPAZ can confirm that the nine individuals are currently awaiting deportation. We will continue to work tirelessly to combat the scourge of dangerous drugs, as it poses a significant threat to the well-being of our nation.”

Commitment to Tougher Sentences Going Forward

Looking ahead, the NPAZ said it is implementing stricter measures to address drug-related cases more effectively.

Henceforth, all Public Prosecutors have been instructed to prefer the correct charges in all drug-related cases, and ensure that they aggressively pursue stiffer sentences in court, to secure penalties that truly reflect the seriousness of these offences,” the statement added.

The authority reaffirmed its stance against drug abuse, saying it poses a serious threat to Zimbabwe’s well-being, and commended the public for its vigilance.

“We are committed to a future where drug-related offences are met with sentences that truly reflect their gravity,” the NPAZ concluded.
