ZESA Warns Prepaid System Down Nationwide, Advises Customers to Buy at ZETDC Offices
Zimbabwe’s power utility has issued an urgent notice after its prepaid electricity system went down, forcing customers to physically visit offices to buy tokens, as online and third-party platforms remain unavailable.
The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), a subsidiary of the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA), confirmed the disruption on 23 March 2026. The outage has affected all digital vending platforms, including mobile money services, banking applications, and supermarket point-of-sale systems.
System Outage Disrupts Token Purchases
In a public notice released on the same day, ZETDC acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the system failure. The utility said the disruption has made it impossible for customers to purchase prepaid electricity through normal digital channels.
A statement from the utility explained:
“The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) sincerely apologises to its valued customers for the current system outage affecting the prepaid vending platform.”
The company further clarified the extent of the disruption, stating:
“Please be advised that all third-party vending platforms including mobile money platforms, banking apps, supermarket Point of Sale (POS) systems, and all online channels are currently unavailable for token purchases.”
The outage has effectively left thousands of households and businesses unable to top up electricity using their usual, convenient methods.
Customers Directed To Physical Offices
As a temporary measure, ZETDC advised customers to visit designated service points to access electricity tokens while the system remains offline.
The utility said:
“While our technical teams work tirelessly to restore full service, customers are advised that they can purchase electricity tokens by visiting their nearest ZETDC Banking Hall.”
This means customers must travel to physical offices, a move that could result in long queues and delays, especially in high-density areas.
ZETDC indicated that its technical teams are actively working to resolve the issue but did not provide a specific timeline for full restoration.
Utility Promises Updates As Work Continues
The power distributor assured customers that updates would be communicated as progress is made towards restoring the prepaid system.
In its closing remarks, ZETDC stated:
“Further updates on the progress of the restoration will be shared regularly. The inconvenience caused is sincerely regretted.”
The notice, issued under the Stakeholder Relations department, also provided customer support contact numbers for assistance during the outage.
Customers seeking assistance can contact ZETDC on 704, 08688003485/6, 0242704040 or +263715519387.
As of 23 March 2026, there has been no confirmation on what caused the system failure or when full service will resume.
