Nollywood Star Alex Ekubo Dies at 40 After Reported Battle With Cancer
The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of popular Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo
He died at the age of 40 after a reported battle with cancer.
According to emerging reports on Tuesday evening, the celebrated actor died in a hospital in Lagos after suffering complications linked to an illness he had allegedly been managing privately for some time.
The heartbreaking news has sparked an outpouring of grief across social media, with fellow actors, celebrities, and fans paying tribute to one of Nollywood’s most recognisable stars.

Several prominent figures in Nigeria’s entertainment industry shared emotional messages following news of Ekubo’s passing.
Award-winning actress Funke Akindele expressed her sorrow in a touching tribute posted on Instagram, recalling their friendship and cherished memories together.
She wrote:
“I really tried to reach out, to see you one more time but guess you knew best. May your kind soul rest in peace Alex. Ore mi, like you fondly called me, I will always remember and cherish the good times we shared together. Rest in peace Alex.”
Actor Godwin Nnadiekwe also shared an emotional message, saying the news had left him devastated.
“This news has truly broken me. Nollywood has lost a rare soul, and I’m at a loss for words because this wasn’t the plan, Alex Ekubo.
“To think you already prepared your will. It’s a heartbreak I can’t quite describe. Rest well, my friend,” he wrote.
Other celebrities, including Mercy Johnson, Frodd and Uriel Oputa, also joined mourners in honouring the late actor.
A Career That Made Him a Nollywood Favourite
Born on April 10, 1986, in Port Harcourt, Ekubo hailed from Arochukwu in Abia State. He attended Federal Government College Daura in Katsina State before pursuing higher education in Calabar.
He earned a diploma in Mass Communication from Calabar Polytechnic and later graduated with a Law degree from the University of Calabar.
Ekubo made his acting debut in the 2005 production Sinners in the House and went on to become a household name in Nollywood through appearances in numerous hit films.
Some of his notable works included A Sunday Affair, Omo Ghetto: The Saga, Weekend Getaway, Lagos Cougars and Your Excellency.
Beyond acting, he was admired for his fashion sense, charismatic personality, and strong social media presence, making him one of the most followed and celebrated actors of his generation.
Personal Life Often in the Spotlight
Ekubo also attracted widespread public attention in 2021 after his engagement to model Fancy Acholonu ended just months before their planned wedding, a development that generated significant discussion across entertainment circles.
Despite personal challenges, the actor remained active in the entertainment industry and continued to enjoy strong support from fans across Africa and beyond.
His reported death marks another painful loss for Nollywood, with many describing him as a talented performer whose impact on the industry will not be forgotten.
