Health Ministry Reassures Public Amid Fears of Rising Respiratory Infections

Zimbabwe’s health authorities have moved to reassure the public after a wave of flu-related illnesses sparked fears of a possible Covid-19 comeback.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has dismissed those concerns, saying the rise in cases does not signal a Covid-19 resurgence.

Flu Cases Below Seasonal Norms

Ministry spokesperson Donald Mujiri confirmed to The Herald that surveillance data shows approximately 3 000 influenza cases recorded so far — a figure significantly lower than what is typically expected at this time of year.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care would like to assure the public that there is no cause for alarm about influenza at the moment. About 3 000 cases have been recorded, which is lower than what is normally expected at this time of the year,” Mujiri said.

He added that health authorities are continuing to monitor trends closely across the country.

Covid-19 No Longer a National Threat

The ministry reiterated that Covid-19 should now be treated like any other disease, following the Government’s 2023 declaration informed by the World Health Organisation’s decision to lift Covid-19’s status as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

Daily Covid-19 Situation Reports were phased out, with the last update issued in August 2023.

According to the ministry’s cumulative surveillance report, Zimbabwe recorded 316 064 influenza cases and seven deaths as of November 30, 2025.

Flu Peak Season Approaching

Despite the reassuring figures, Mujiri cautioned that the country is heading into the traditional flu peak period.

Flu cases usually increase between March and April. Current levels remain manageable, but the ministry urges the public to practise good hygiene, seek medical care early if symptoms develop, and take steps to protect others,” he said.

Symptoms Can Mimic Covid-19

Medical professionals note that common influenza can closely resemble Covid-19, with symptoms such as high fever, sore throat, fatigue, joint pain, chills, loss of appetite and general weakness.

Health experts stress that the most effective response to a flu diagnosis is immediate self-isolation.
