NRZ Launches Harare-Mutare Luxury Train: Timetable and Fares Revealed
The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has introduced a special Rail Leisure train service between Harare and Mutare to coincide with the 18th edition of the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi Tourism Expo. The event, running under the theme “Devolving Sustainable Tourism Development – Our Future”, is being held in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry (MoTHI) and the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA).
The train can carry 243 passengers, offering a luxurious and scenic travel experience.
In a statement on Monday, 1 September 2025, the NRZ confirmed that the refurbishment of coaches is being finalised at its Bulawayo mechanical workshops. The full stretch of the railway line between Harare and Mutare has been completely rehabilitated, ensuring smooth rides with breathtaking views of Zimbabwe’s natural beauty.
The inaugural train to Mutare will depart Harare at 07:00 on 5 September, followed by departures on 7 and 9 September. Return trips from Mutare to Harare are scheduled for 6 and 8 September at 07:00, with an overnight journey on 12 September departing at 20:00. No trains will run on 10 and 11 September, which are reserved for excursions in Mutare.
Passengers—including local, regional, and international exhibitors, buyers, media, and tourists—can enjoy entertainment and refreshments on board while experiencing the luxury of rail travel.
The one-way fare is $60, making this a convenient and affordable option. NRZ encourages everyone to take advantage of the service and looks forward to welcoming passengers on board. While this initiative is designed for the tourism expo, NRZ plans to explore further collaborations after the event.
