‘One of the Best We Have’: Itu Khune Tips Kaizer Chiefs Goalkeeper Brandon Petersen for Bafana Bafana

Itu Khune Tips Kaizer Chiefs Goalkeeper Brandon Petersen for Bafana Bafana

Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune believes Kaizer Chiefs shot-stopper Brandon Petersen has done more than enough this season to earn a place in the Bafana Bafana national team setup.

Khune was speaking after Chiefs’ recent CAF Confederation Cup outing, where Petersen once again played a decisive role between the posts.

Numbers That Strengthen the Case

Petersen, 31, has quietly built one of the strongest goalkeeping campaigns in the Premiership, registering 15 clean sheets in 23 matches across all competitions. His consistency has made him one of Chiefs’ most reliable performers this season.

On Sunday, the goalkeeper produced a string of crucial saves to help Amakhosi secure a win over ZESCO United, extending his impressive run of form on the continental stage.

‘These Saves Matter’ — Itu Khune

Khune highlighted the importance of Petersen’s shot-stopping, warning that good goalkeeping can sometimes be taken for granted.

“I think players sometimes relax when the goalkeeper is making saves. Look at how important these saves were to keep another clean sheet,” Khune said on SABC1.

He added that Petersen’s impact over the season should not be overlooked by national team selectors.

He’s been very important throughout the season and I hope he continues with these performances so he can be called to Bafana, because right now he’s one of the best we have in the country.”

Khumalo Points to Defensive Improvements

Club legend Doctor Khumalo also praised Petersen’s influence, saying Chiefs’ progress is closely linked to the goalkeeper’s form.

“A goalkeeper can win you games. He’s the last line of defence — after him, it’s the net. If you have a well-performing Petersen like this, then clearly Chiefs are going somewhere,” Khumalo said.

However, Khumalo noted that Chiefs still have room for improvement, particularly when defending set-pieces.

The defensive structure has improved, but now the focus must be on dead-ball situations — making sure the right players are marking dangerous attackers,” he added.
